A Request to Paint...Toilet Paper!

I was a little surprised but not really surprised, if that makes sense. We all know that during this Covid-19 pandemic, there was a shortage of toilet paper. Everyone was rushing to get the last pack of toilet paper. Right now, we can only get single rolls from our local grocery store. I ended getting a call requesting if I could paint them a roll of toilet paper. I ended up laughing a little and saying ofcourse, sure! She then explained it was for her bathroom and it all made sense. She also requested rainbow colors in the background, we decided on a few, rather then the whole rainbow. This is a reminder of what we are experiencing during this difficult time, but also a piece of art for the bathroom. I really enjoyed making this painting, the hardest part was getting the shadows right on the roll. I also made a time lapse, take a look!

NCIS students had a great week of creating artwork! Every day I get emails from parents and students and I love seeing everyone of them. Thank you for sending your creations! 4th grade students are still learning about the Art of China, creating characters and Chinese vases. 5th graders were continuing to learn about landscapes and famous landmarks. They learned how to draw the Niagara Falls this week. 6th graders continued with the Art of Realism and learned about a famous painting with cows and also learned how to draw a cow. Hope you enjoy looking at the student art gallery from Newark Charter!

My mom, the Artist

My mom, one of the nicest and kindest people I know, is also an artist! When I was growing up I don't remember seeing her make a lot of art, maybe its because she had 4 kids and my dad was working. I do remember her making beautifully decorated Ukrainian pysanky eggs though. I also remember her making these decorated birthday cakes, which looked like a piece of art. She actually only started to paint in watercolor about 10 years ago, and dabbled in oils about 40 years ago. She started taking art classes at Montgomery College in Maryland and at local high schools. She said she would call herself a "realist painter." She is pretty amazing...she paints every little detail of her subject. She loves to paint nature, especially birds, flowers, and animals. We are very similar in the sense that we are both very aware of trees, flowers, and the sky, and love including them in our art. She is also trying to broaden herself by using watercolor pencils and pen and ink. My mom still takes classes at the local senior center and also takes some private lessons. She loves art and color(me too), and she would like to continue making art as long as she can. Even though our styles are so different we truly appreciate how we make our art. We love looking at them, talking about them, and sharing our paintings with each other. In the end, that is what art is all about-appreciation, love, and acceptance. Enjoy my moms art below!

Painting Daffodils

I love painting flowers, and when I saw the daffodils blooming a few weeks ago I knew I had to paint them. I cut them down, picked a vase and placed it on my table. I decided to use the two different walls in our family room as the background colors. Our ceilings are really white but I wanted to continue with the blue color. The brown table is actually a table that my dad made for us! Now that he is retired he does woodworking, and he also makes gorgeous wooden bowls. While the flowers were set up on the table, light was coming in from the sliding glass door. That is why you see a shadow on the table and some of the green stems look lighter on the right side. I also really wanted to show some of the flowers close up and bigger, and some further away. My favorite part of the painting are the two close up daffodils at the top. I had a great time painting it, you should try it! Cut some flowers from your garden and start drawing.

This week brings more beautiful student artwork to my blog. Every email that I receive brings happiness to my heart, so thank you again NCIS students!! 4th grade students were learning about the art of China this week, and they were practicing how to draw Chinese characters and bamboo. 5th graders are learning about American artists, those from the Hudson River School, who created landscapes. 6th graders were learning about Realism and how to draw things realistically. I hope you enjoy my students artwork as much as I do!

While I am painting the daffodils I cut from my backyard, I start to think about my style of art. When I started to seriously start painting back in 2014, I remember thinking about how I wanted to show my style of art. I know I am obsessed with all of the Impressionist artists. Van Gogh is my all time favorite but I also love Monet, Degas, and Cezanne. What do I like about these artists? I love the color and the movement! Oh the color, its usually mixed colors and lots of it. I love seeing all the brushstrokes and feeling their art. So.. back to my art. I feel like I have an impressionist quality to my work, and it could be because of the artists that I love. I do feel that I have my own style of Impressionism and somewhat realistic, its kind of a mix. I want people to feel my art, not just see it. I want to show my love of art through my brushstrokes and bold colors. Either way, everyone has their own style of art and I truly appreciate every one of them. Soon, I want to show you my mom's paintings, which are very realistic. They are beautiful! What is your favorite style of art?
