Timeline

2 Months

Leaving behind familiar surroundings, saying goodbye to friends, adjusting to a new environment, and dealing with the stress of packing and organizing can all be overwhelming. My goals were to create a moving support website that offers not only practical tips and advice for the logistics of moving, but also focuses on the emotional well-being of individuals and their families.

  • The Problem

Moving is a daunting task and users are feeling disorganized, stressed, not knowing where to start, and how to get help. Users want to find reliable moving services while also locating valuable resources for family and mental health support. This website will help them with the mental and physical aspects of moving.

  • The Solution

This platform was created to address the various needs individuals may have when moving to a new place, including finding moving resources, strengthening family connections, and offering mental support during this significant life change. Creating a centralized platform that offers both moving assistance and resources for family and mental support can streamline the process and reduce stress for everyone involved.

User Goals

  • Locate a website that will support both my physical and emotional needs when moving.

  • Find an affordable and easy-to-book moving truck.

  • Help with planning a move to minimize stress and make the process as smooth as possible.

Business Goals

  • Create a one-of-a-kind website where users feel supported both with their physical and mental needs.

  • Raising awareness about mental health during the process of moving is an important and often overlooked aspect of well-being.

Research Goals

My research goal is to understand obstacles, pain points, needs during a move, required services, mental health and stress levels during relocation. By addressing these factors comprehensively, individuals undergoing relocation can experience a smoother transition with reduced stress and better overall well-being.

Research

Competitive Analysis

During competitive analysis I was able to look at 3 different companies and compare their advantages and disadvantages. I was also able to decide what my website needed compared to the competition, to set my company apart. I noticed that other companies or organizations do not have sufficient mental health support in place during the moving process. In addition, even though all companies have a “get a quote” service, the process of obtaining quotes for moving services can sometimes be less than seamless and time-consuming.

Key Findings

  • Clutter.com, move.com and mymove.com all had moving companies or trucks to rent.

  • All companies had a “get a quote” on their website but it was challenging. The process should be user-friendly and an efficient experience.

  • Websites had various checklists that were helpful in ensuring that the users stay organized.

  • None of the companies had mental help support to reduce stress.

User Interviews

During user interviews I was able to see the struggles that people go through when they move to a new place. I found out that people don’t just want a moving service, they want to find support for their family.

I needed to find some
stress free activities.

I was nervous to uproot my family.

Labeling and organizing
was important to me.

I wanted my kids to meet new friends.

Interview Data

After finding out what the competitors had on their websites, I could decide what questions to ask the users. I interviewed 5 users that moved overseas, across the state, and in the same town. The data shows the frustrations and what is most important to them when moving.

Key Findings

  • All needed a moving truck or moving resources.

  • Selling items online were important.

  • Organization is imperative.

  • Help is needed for the family.

  • All users needed stress relief.

Key Takeaways

Individuals feel more confident during the moving process through organization, checklists, and social engagement. Helping family members during this period can alleviate some of the burdens.

Incorporating stress relief activities and seeking mental support during a move can significantly contribute to a positive moving experience, allowing individuals to focus on other essential tasks.

Finding reliable moving and cleaning services through a user-friendly website can greatly simplify the process. This type of platform offers such services by allowing users to search for available trucks, compare prices, and make reservations conveniently online.

Define

Who is my Persona?

Creating a persona based on the common traits and needs of the individuals from my user interviews, helped me understand my target audience better.

“Working Mom”

Elizabeth is a dedicated project manager, and she takes her professional responsibilities seriously. She is also a loving and caring mother to two children, ages 2 and 6. Recently, her family moved to a new place due to a job transfer, which has added to her already busy schedule. Her main goal is feeling a sense of calm on a daily basis.

Site Map

While creating my site map, I had my user in mind when deciding what topics she would need the most, and how easily she could find them. Moving resources, family, and mental support are the primary topics on the Moving Support website.

Ideate

User Flows

I started with a prototype for reserving a truck to create more targeted and effective user experiences for each scenario.

User Flow: As a working mom from state to state, I want to find the best moving truck at the best price, so that moving my family can be as stress free as possible.

Prioritizing Features

By conducting user interviews and creating personas, I have gathered valuable insights into my users' needs and preferences. This information helps me prioritize features effectively and make informed decisions about what to include in the product roadmap.

Wireframes

Designing with the user in mind can greatly enhance the user experience and make your product more intuitive and user-friendly. Using bold and standout images along with bright-colored buttons can be an effective strategy to create visually engaging and attention-grabbing wireframes.

Design

Component Library

Designing a website, logo, and icons for different task flows (reserving a truck, a school checklist, and stress relief activities) can greatly enhance the user experience and make your platform more visually appealing.

Using Figma, I translated my desktop sketches into high fidelity wireframes. Incorporating visuals that resonate with the website's themes of moving, family connections, and mental health support can greatly enhance the user experience. Using original designs and carefully chosen free images can help create a visually engaging and relatable interface for users.

Prototype

Total Participants: 5

Goal: To determine if the navigation flow in the wireframes were easy to understand, I employed a variety of methods to gather feedback and evaluate the user experience.

Test

Usability Testing

User testing is a crucial step in the design process to ensure that your platform is user-friendly and meets the needs of your target audience.

I tested the “Rent a Truck” user flow, to see if the user could easily enter their location and dates to get rates. They will then select a rate and confirm their order for a smooth experience.

Task 1: Click on rent a truck, add location and date, and search for rates. On the first rate, tow my car needs to be checked, as well as confirming the order.

There was a 100% success rate when conducting the usability testing. All participants completed the test from start to finish.

Analysis of Test Results

Feedback:

Users suggested to change the wording of Find a Mover to Rent a Truck on the landing page. This feedback leads to further improvement and optimizations.

Iterate

Usability Testing

I changed the title of “Find a Mover” to “Rent a Truck” so users would not be confused. Now they will know exactly what they are looking for.

Final Thoughts

Creating a website that's easy to navigate and visually appealing is indeed crucial for providing a positive user experience. I am convinced they will feel the ease and love from this website. Moving Support is not only easy to use but also radiates a sense of care and attention that can leave a lasting positive impression on my users.

Next Steps:

  • Create an animated feature.

  • Login and create an account component should be added.

  • Create wireframes for other task flows on the website.

  • Conduct more usability testing for additional prototypes.

  • Create high fidelity mobile wireframes.
